Condition and information:

The most famous Pelikan pen, the model 140 in tortoise green. The Pelikan 140 is one of the most sought after Pelikan pens, extremely reliable and perfect writer for all kinds of uses. It features the original 1950s nib with the signature Pelikan nib curvature which gives it a very nice viewing space and flexibility while writing. The nib is smooth, gliding on the paper, very precise. It's suspended over the original ebonite feed, which provides a constant ink-flow and no skipping. More importantly it has the original ebonite/hard rubber collar/feed ring, which holds the nib to the feed. This small but crucial part was later changed to Plexiglas like material which almost always cracked and rendered many 140 pens useless. This original early production ebonite collar is semi-flexible and never cracks. The Piston filling is very smooth and easy to use and fill, takes a considerable amount of ink, with the original double seal silicone cork which never leaks and always fills the pen to the top. These were the first Pelikan pens to use the silicone cork which later became industry standard. The nib is fully flexible, it will write all sizes up to double broad with a gentle press while writing. Very clean body, beautifully tortoise green transparent, thus the whole body basically represents the ink window with crisp tortoise stripes. The pen is super ergonomic, with classic torpedo shape, it feels nice in the hand, and the section fits perfectly into the fingers, does not tire the hand while writing, it just feels nice as these only these old Pelikan pens can feel. Even though the Pelikan 140 is considered a compact pen, its arguably the perfect pen size, with perfect length and thickness, which is more important, however it is intended to be used posted when it gets its perfect balance. The Pelikan 140 pen is one of the most reliable Pelikan pens ever made, and one of the best constructed pens by Pelikan; they almost never crack, the piston is simple but perfectly functional and reliable, and the nib unit is easy to unscrew completely to clean or to replace; a feature Pelikan uses to this day; even the size of the feed ring and thread step is nearly identical to today. Logo is located on top of the cap. The pen is in excellent condition with minimal signs of use.

  • Fabulous pen, great service
    Review by JL on 9/13/2021
I'm very new to the fountain pen hobby and just recently started looking into getting a vintage pen. That's how I stumbled across ProtoPens. The experience in purchasing this pen has been tremendous. First of all, the information provided by the site is so detailed with high resolution photos, comprehensive description and an impressive video. So, I ordered the pen. It was a bit nerve-wracking waiting for it because I wondered if the description, photos and video were just generic and I would end up with a less impressive version of the pen. Fortunately, the pen was shipped out quickly and I received it in just over a week. I had no need to worry. The pen was just as it had been described and depicted. It is very small by today's standards so it took a little while to get used to, but posted it is sufficiently long. I had heard that the feel of celluloid was so different than current day turned acrylics and wondered if I would really be able to tell the difference and I do really love the feel (and the sweet scent) of celluloid. The pen is a terrific writer though it took a bit of getting used to how much ink it lays down. Only having experienced two other fountain pens, this one is the wettest pen by far. Once you get used to using lighter hand, it lays down a fine enough line even for my small handwriting. I am so please with this pen and my experience with ProtoPens that I now check their site for new stock regularly.
