The original 1951 first series Pelikan 500 model. This original 500 & 550 models were the high-end flagship pens, a sub-line of the original 400&450 models launched in 1951 and in production till 1954. There were very few of these pens made, and especially these early versions with a "Double' L" mark, meaning rolled gold over brass. As good as the 400 model is, this is a class up, simply astonishing pens. This series was launched to replace the original 100 model, and became one of the most recognizable, reliable, sought after Pelikan pens of all time. The fountain pen has a perfect form factor and balance, it simply feels right in the hand. Even though it is 125mm long, it feels as a very large pen, and when the cap is posted, due to the cap's enormous weight it provides for that perfect Pelikan balance. It is a very thick pen, the size and form factor on the grip section are still the basis of today's Pelikan pens. The pen features a fully flexible EF (extra fine) size nib. These 50's Pelikan nibs are simply astonishing, melting on the paper, smooth as a paint brush. The nib will produce all sorts of line variations, from EF fine to a double and even triple broad on the down and side strokes. This will produce amazing writing, the best one could hope to achieve with a fountain pen. The nib huge and its suspended on an elongated original ebonite feed, which provides for perfect ink flow and consistency. The fountain pen is accompanied with it's original mechanical pencil, also rolled gold. The pencil is a masterpiece in its own field, model 550, based on the 450 model, feels solid, heavy with a very precise lead deployment. The set comes in it's original genuine leather pouch. Though the pouch shows just some ware, this is a ultra rare Pelikan pouch, made out of three colors, blue zipper, white leather inside and red outside, probably representing some flag, like the French flag, or similar. Both pens are in excellent condition, minimal signs of use, but no dings, scratches, cracks or anything of the kind, amazing condition for such a historic pens close to 70 years old. Both pens are engraved with "Gunther Wagner Pelikan" the proud signature of the company's founder found on these early Pelikan pens. The fountain pen features a smooth piston, takes a considerable amount of ink due to the silicone cork which replaced the original corks from the late 1940's onward. When filled the ink in the pen can last for a whole month of normal everyday use. Very colorful high gloss see through brown tortoise body shell and very nice amber yellow color. Logo located on top of the cap. This is the Pelikan flagship pen for years, all luxurious models were based on this model. One of the best vintage Pelikan pens ever made.
