In 1982 the Pelikan Company decided it was time for a remake for their bestseller model, the 400 from the 1950s, and created this model named M400.
This is the 1982 original rebirth of the original 1951 400 model, and it's nearly identical. Unlike later M400 that bare little resemblance to the original 400's, these early '80s, 400's are nearly identical and future a better build quality.
The body of the pen is crafted in thick tortoise green striped resin which in combination with the black parts create an elegant pen. All metal parts are thick gold filled. The high-quality materials contribute for a shiny and durable pen. The Pelican logo stands proudly located on top of the cap, inlaid in green color. The cap ring features nice crisp engravings that read "Pelikan" and "Germany".

There are many unique features on this pen, starting from the semi-enclosed nib with a great viewing space. The nib is large and it's a very good smooth writer. It's a special OM, oblique medium, and can produce amazing writing. Oblique nibs can write a good line variation even without flex, as the nib will change its line thickness on every stroke. Such nibs are no longer made on new fountain pens. The pen uses a piston filling mechanism, which fills smoothly and takes a substantial amount of ink.
This is the Pelikan flagship pen for years. Very smooth on the paper, perfect writer, great feel in the hand and superb grip, perfectly balanced pen posted or not.  One of the best Pelikan pens ever made, and THE best M400.
