Condition and information:
This is the rarest Pelikan 400 model of the 50's era, the very shortly produced Pelikan 400N model. This model was made only for around two years, from mid 1955 to mid 1957 and its one of those super rare gems of vintage Pelikan pens. Unlike the other pens in these series which were made longer, such the original Pelikan 400 made from 1951 to 1955, and later Pelikan 400NN made from 1957 to 1965. The "N" nomenclature on each pen model stand for "Neu" meaning "New", therefore on this model N stands for "Pelikan 400 New", and on the 400NN for "New New"

The 400N series was launched to replace the original 400 model with just slightly more pronounced turning knob curvature and captop logo. However the model was in production for less then two years and it was replaced by the modernized model 400NN. Thus these pens are so rare today and its a true joy when such a fine sample is discovered and brought back to life. The Pelikan 400 series is one of the most recognized and beloved pens in the world, is the only pen that had 4 successor models, and even later from 1982 with the M400 and even the new Souveran lines 400, 600, 800, 1000 form factor are based on this pen. This is not a coincidence, the pen has a nearly perfect form factor and balance, it simply feels right in the hand. Even though it's 128mm long, it feels as a large pen, and when the cap is posted, it provides for that perfect Pelikan writing balance. It is a thick pen, the size and form factor on the grip section are still the basis of today's Pelikan pens. The pen features a very nice and smooth M medium size nib. These 50s Pelikan nibs are simply astonishing, grabbing and melting on the paper, smooth as a paint brush. The nib is semi-flexible and with a gentle push will produce some wider lines depending on the angle in respect to the paper. The nib is suspended on the original ebonite feed which provides for perfect ink flow and consistency with wide ink canal. The piston is smooth, takes a considerable amount of ink. It has its original silicone cork which replaced the original corks from the 1940s. Fully filled with ink, the pen can write for quite some time. Very colorful high gloss tortoise shell body clear and translucent; thick gold filled clip, ring and cap ring, gold wear off is unlikely. Logo located on top of the cap. Very nice and very clear imprints both on the cap and body "PELIKAN 400" and "PELIKAN 400 GUNThER WAGNER" on the body. The 400 model is the most refined and the longest produced model of all Pelikan pens and the 400N is the rarest of them all. This is the Pelikan flagship pen for years, all luxurious models were based on this model. One of the best vintage Pelikan pens ever made.  The pen is in absolute mint condition no scratches, no cracks or marks of any kind, perfectly preserved! Comes in its original genuine leather pouch, but the pouch has very visible signs of use such as ware & tear.

*The last 2 photos show head-to-head comparison of this pen the 400N model and the 400NN model. This listing is only for the 400N pen.
