We are very proud to offer this rare Montblanc Pix 72 PL, where PL stands for "Platinum Line" and not platinum plated as some sources claim. The metal parts on this pencil are thick gold plated, that is front lead deployment section with the conical cutouts, as well as the clip.

This pencil is part of several Montblanc pencils from this find, 8 in total, all made in the mid to late 1930s and it was also accompanied by several other Montblanc fountain pens from that find, 6 in total. All of the pencils including this one were in mint condition, but were not NOS new old stock items as most of the Pelikan pens were, as well as most of the other brands from the find. All of these showed some signs of use, but still in amazing condition. This would indicate that these were either returned items, but this would not explain how all of them are in fully functional condition. Our theory is that these were sold as second hand items even then, as we could imagine that the store owner did not have a contract with Montblanc as their official reseller, but yet he wanted to offer some Montblanc writing instruments. Maybe these Montblanc pens and pencils were traded/exchanged for other items he had in his shop, hence they were sold as they were acquired.
Regardless, after they pass our restoration process they will be in a near perfect cosmetic condition and fully operational.
This 72 PL pencil was made in the mid 1930s, with a solid brass mechanism and superb manufacturing quality. This was the time when these repeater pencils were becoming extremely popular and every company had to have a similar product. At around the same time, in 1935 Pelikan launched its Pelikan AUCH 200 Pencil, which is nearly identical in size to this pencil, as well as in form and function. Not surprisingly then, there were 3 Pelikan 200 AUCH Pencils in this find along these Montblanc pencils.
The Montblanc 72 PL was the top of the line Montblanc pencil. It is made out of amazingly well done celluloid, with a deep pearl glossy like appearance which gives it a depth, difficult to capture in photos. This texture and celluloid pattern is what is sometimes referred to as "Tiger Eye" striped and it was usually done in either green such as this pencil or brown stripes. These pencils are still hard to match by quality and performance, and are still the desired choice by many artists and engineers. This pencil is nearly 90 years old and still looks modern, still unique and appealing and most importantly, extremely reliable, precise and easy to use. Very precise and smooth repeater mechanism operation. It uses the standard at the time, 1.18mm lead refills, still widely available and used today. Such thick refills can be deployed 3-5mm in front of the tip for a better viewing space and more precision drawing without breaking the lead. The pencil is in great condition, it had some minimal signs of use and some light surface scratches, but a perfectly working and preserved piece of art, with timeless design, superb ergonomics with great feel and grip in the hand. It comes with several 5cm long leads, ready to be used. These are the original HB leads that were inside it as it was sold at the time.
