Condition and information:
One of the rarest and most beautiful original Centropen pens, the flagship 100820 model. Centropen was one of the best eastern block pen companies. They still manufacture pens today, but their legacy is enormous. Today, vintage Cnetropen pens are considered some of the best in the world. Being an East block company, they didn't save much on precious metals, or other valuable materials, thus their pens are ones of highest quality, and that is obvious. The pens offered here are such an example. The best Centropen pens we've over offered. Unlike many Centropen pens that featured a built in piston converter, this fountain pen has a standard piston with a blind cap. The most amazing part is the deep pearl brown celluloid body. It is difficult to capture in the photos, but the pens look and feel as they were made from glass rather then celluloid. The pen is very thick, oversize, feels right and solid in the hand. It is heavy, and has a large ink reservoir, one of the largest we've seen. The nib simply feels as a paint brush, the tines of the nib split apart as soon as it touches the paper. It is an super smooth EF extra fine size, but it will write anything from Extra Fine EF to double broad and even triple broad on the down strokes and the odd side strokes. The nib is amazing writer and smooth on the paper even when the tines come apart. It is also a large nib, almost twice the size of a Pelikan 140 nib. The writing with this nib is remarkable it will produce any thickness line, from thinnest to thickest. The nib is suspended over an ebonite feed with a great and consistent ink flow. Writing with this pen will take some time getting used to, it is not like ordinary fountain pen, the nib is soft and requires gentle and smooth handling and writing. Both pens feature gold filled plated metal parts, so no gold ware off is possible. Another special feature is the clear ink window which will change color to whatever color ink is being used. The pen is highly ergonomic, perfect length and thickness, very good grip and feel in the hand. Extremely well build, simply very beautiful and unique pen with amazing writing experience. The pen is accompanied by its original mechanical pencil. The pencil is heavy with solid brass components. Perfectly functional mechanism with precise clicks and lead deployment. The set comes in its unique form factor, genuine leather red and grey pouch, truly rarely seen by Centropen. The pouch features a leather pocket inside, so the used can place notes, pictures, cash or similar small paper items. Both pens are in absolute mint condition, no signs of use, no scratches or cracks. Truly amazing pens and true piece of history form the fountain pen era.

  • Exotic and a Stunning Pen
Review by Jason Waskiewicz on 11/28/2016
When I read the description of this pen and pencil set, I figured there was some hyperbole. And, as I set to write the actual review I realized that, without intending to, I used the same description in my summary: stunning. This pen is really something. I did research into the company's history on my own, and I believe this pen really is the expertise of 12 small manufacturers coming together under the Centropen brand.

The nib really is the most flexible nib I've ever used. I own other pens with a flexible nib, including a Waterman's Ideal 52. This is far more so. It easily goes from EF to BBB as described with no effort. I did have one concern with the nib: the tines were not aligned. They look aligned in the photo, but it was the first thing I noticed when I uncapped the pen. Fortunately, I was able to repair that. A nib this flexible is not suited to be a daily writer, but it is a lot of fun (with an appropriately gentle hand).

The material is a deep brown celluloid and reminds me of some of the quality celluloids seen on modern pens of higher quality. It's actually fun the turn this pen and watch the finish. The finish on both the pen and pencil really is like new. Also, as the description states, it really is difficult to photograph well (I tried). There is some wear on the clip but, because it is gold filled, it's really not noticeable, just an artifact of being 50 or so years old.

I really appreciated that the only "branding" was on the case and the ISCO on the nib.

I have less to say about the pencil, mostly because I don't use mechanical pencils much. It looks good. The odd lead size means I can't find refills locally (small, rural town) so I'll need to look online. But, the mechanism does operate precisely, as promised. When I do get some lead, I won't have to worry about it drying out if I don't use it often...

I have a hard time paying this kind of money for a fountain pen. But, this is honestly one I do not regret. I've really enjoyed learning about Centropen, and now I'll keep my eyes open for more pens from this brand. It is very impressive.
