Condition and information:
Offered here is a rare Reform rollerball pen, No. 966. These started production in the late 1970s and went throughout the late 1980s. These 966s usually came in pen sets with fountain, ballpoint or pencils, but they could be bought individually at Reform or other specialty pen stores, and customers could choose between black, red, blue or green captop to be installed on the pen. This was very important and convenient as they could, easily tell which color refill they have inside each pen if they had multiple such pens.
 
It originally came with either a Euro Standard Reform fineliner refill or a rollerball refill. The Eurosize standard rollerball refills were standardized in the late 1970s and became very popular in the 1980s and still are today as the writing is much much smoother than with a ballpoint pen. The basic difference between rollerball and ballpoint is that the first uses a water based ink where viscosity is very low and the ink flow is very high, hence no pressure is needed to be applied on the pen/paper for it to write, it just glides on the paper and produces a line nearly effortlessly, as opposed to the latter which uses an oil based ink and needs more pressure to produce a line. Rollerball refills also feature a bigger "rolling" steel ball (bearing) at the tip as opposed to a ballpoint refills which feature a smaller ball at the tip of the refill. Those two differences make rollerball writing stronger in color, with sharper and clearer lines as it places much more ink on the paper than a ballpoint produced writing which can often be a bit opaque and requires more pressure. That is why rollerball refills are much bigger than ballpoint refills in size and thus ink capacity.
 
The pen as all Reform pens is high quality, extremely ergonomic, beautiful and elegant form factor, with decades of Reform's pen making knowhow instilled in it. Sits just right in the hand, and when posted it can feel as writing with a fountain pen. It is a larger pen, close to 150mm when posted, so it provides a nice balance. When closed, it is nearly identical in form and size as the Reform 4328 and the 6488 fountain pens on which it is based and was usually sold in a set with those fountain pens and other Reform fountain pens from that era. It has a high gloss high grade plastic body and cap. There is a small soft spring coil inside which also fits on the new Eurosize rollerball refill, which helps dampen the refill inside, so when the tip is touched to the paper, it does not feel stiff, rather it acts like a suspension and softens the writing experience. Overall a great daily writer, very convenient, reliable, easy to use and beautiful to look at with that timeless 1980s style and fountain pen form factor.
The pen is in NOS New Old Stock never used condition, a Reform time capsule.

The Eurosize standard rollerball or fineliner refills are readily available in any office supplies store and produced by majority of the European pen manufacturers to this day.
