Condition and information:
Offered here is a very rare blue captop Kaweco 02 D - Durchschreiber, fitted with D-EF nib, meaning "write-through" nib, where the nib is so stiff, it is actually meant to be used for writing carbon copies. As opposed to the standard nibs, D nibs had only couple of sizes, DEF or DF, D extra fine or D fine, as there was no point in making stiff nibs in various sizes. Besides the slight difference in form factor, the main difference from a standard nib with a D nib is its thickness. The D nib on this pen is at least 2 times thicker than a standard nib. The stiffness would allow the user to press very hard when making carbon copies and make several at once, while the nib will retain its shape. Since the size is F or EF, the carbon copy would also produce a fine line. This makes the writing constant with constant line, but also even if the pen is dropped face on the nib, the nib won't bend. The pen features it original factory fitted blue captop. This was done in order to easily differentiate the pens the user had, for example the used would not have to open each pen to examine the nib and determine which nib was the D nib, rather, would only look at the pens closed, and would easily differentiate by the blue captop.

The pen is made out of black resin giving the pen a unique shine. This is the best material to make pens from, it feels natural, it does not scratch easily and always shines as new. The pen is mint condition, with minimal to signs of use. The nib even though D, is smooth, extra fine, and does not feel stiff as steel nibs. The nib is suspended over the original large ebonite feed, with large ink canals providing constant and uninterrupted inkflow. All trimmings are gold filled, including the logo which is located on the top of the cap. Piston works perfectly, smooth and easy and takes an good amount of ink, so once filled it will last for a while. The pen is efficient, practical, well balanced, with superb form factor, astonishing nib, and very reliable and easy to handle, with unique design and appeal. Rare Kaweco pen with extremely unique nib which echoes how some fountain pens were used and needed decades ago.

Kaweco history: There were times when Montblanc, Pelikan or other European pen makers, would look at a Kaweco pen first before making their own. Kaweco at the end of the 19th century and up to the 60’s, was one of the biggest pen manufacturers in Europe, everyone had a Kaweco pen, they stood out from the competition as they made the highest quality and best designed pens at the time. The company was founded in 1883 by two friends Luce Koch and Enßlen Weber in Heidelberger Germany, as Koch Weber & CO, thus KA WE CO. They had a great start and up to 1929 they had several thousand employees, with revenue at over a million DM. However, in 1929, the same year Pelikan patented their piston filler, Kaweco filed for bankruptcy, unbelievably as they could not sustain their enormous growth. A considerably smaller fountain pen company known as Aurumia, bought the Kaweco factory, and decided to use the same name, Kaweco, as it was well known and admired by the people. Thus Kaweco thrived once again. By the end of the 40's Kaweco had at least one major retail store in all bigger cities, from London to Istanbul, and this was not the case with any other manufacturer in Europe. Kaweco made some of the most luxurious pens in Europe, the most expensive and high end pens, with extraordinarily build quality. Vintage Kaweco pens are some of the most desired and enjoyed among pen collectors.
