Offered here is a very rare model Sheaffer’s Snorkel gold filled fountain pen made in Canada. Sheaffer’s plant in Canada was its first outside US factory, and they made some of the best pens for the Canadian and international market. The Sheaffer’s Snorkel was one of the company’s best pens ever made and originally debuted in the early 1950s. With the invention of the easy to use Snorkel filling system in 1949, Sheaffer’s became one of the pre-eminent pen manufacturers in the United States. The Snorkel filling system works by extending a tube from middle of the nib, essentially siphoning up ink into the sac. With a lever that creates a negative pressure inside the bladder, and repeating motion, the pen is easily filled. This mechanism was revolutionary as it required no wiping of the nib and created minimal mess. It’s still one of the most complex mechanisms ever invented for a fountain pen. What makes this pen particularly unique is that this pen was made in Canada. Sheaffer’s was a predominantly American company and very few Sheaffer’s pens were made outside of the United States until they were bought out in 1997. The pen features a stunning, extruded like from the front section nib, F fine size. The nib is huge, two tone with its own thread that screws it on to the front section. There is so much gold in this nib, that it would make approximately 5 standard fountain pen nibs. The thickness of the nib at the thread is about 1mm. The nib is easy and smooth writing, making clean, consistent and precise line. The cap and barrel blend together seamlessly in a classic “torpedo” form factor, and the ridged grip section barrel makes for a perfect grip. The pen is in perfect condition with, NOS with no scratches or blemishes what so ever. The 14K gold overall filling is stunning and gives that rare pen a great sheen, with guilloche lines stretching from top to bottom on both the cap and the barrel. Since its made out of steel, this makes for a very very heavy pen, feeling great in the hand, with superb balance and handling. The pen is oversize, 163mm long when posted provides superb handling and feel in the hand. Due to its weight virtually no pressure to the paper is needed, just by gliding the pen over the paper will produce a fine and consistent F line. It certainly makes it stand out in a crowd and is a pen to be treasured.
